reputations – a comic

Just as I finished The New American Splendor Anthology, a copy of Eddie Campbell’s Alec: The Years Have Pants omnibus arrived at my door. I had no choice but make a sketchy autobio comic between reads.

The art on this is kinda interesting, especially paired with internalized monologue of the text. However, I gotta say that the words with the picture over/under it is a failed experiment. Though it is kinda cool stylistically, it’s complete ass to read. The rest is pretty great.

I really liked this one. It was totally relatable to me. After high school I ran into people I didn’t know that always said they had heard so much about me, but it was always something that had never happened, usually an event that was far from my actual life – a stint in a mental institution, threesomes at a college I never attended, time in county for dealing drugs (which I never did…the dealing or the time). I got caught up in wondering who the hell was saying these things about me…where did these rumors come from? It was funny because during the time that I was apparently in and out of some form of incarceration or participating in fun sex acts, I was sitting home most nights, reading. I always wanted to be a fly on the wall whenever these people talked about me.

I liked the hard to read text on that one picture. I thought it fit with the feeling of frustration the panel was going for, which I gathered from the “scratchiness” of the text.
